Widsmob Retoucher for Windows Review

Retoucher – WidsMob recently asked me to review the Windows version of their image-editing program. Disclaimer: I am NOT a WidsMob affiliate and I receive no commission from them should you purchase their programs. They provided me with a fully functional version of the program and a few sample images. What do you get for […]

Topaz Sharpen AI – The end of soft images?

Introduction to Topaz Sharpen AI review. Image sharpness is one of the must haves. It’s non-negotiable. Just look at the focus (pun intended) that lens tests place on sharpness and it’s probably fair to say that we have all bought a new lens because it was sharper than one we already had… But there’s more […]

New products

My new products I’ve recently revamped the photo sections of my website –  in addition to reviewing photographic tools and software, I use them to produce photographs and offer these for sale. It’s been a challenge to find the right set of products to sell and to produce them at the right price… I now […]

Skylum Luminar – another look

Skylum Luminar I use RAW converters a lot – I shoot in RAW 99% of the time and need my RAW converter to be working with me and not hindering me. Luminar is in my toolkit, and I thought it was time to give it a difficult image top process. My last test of Luminar […]

Exposure X5 Announced

Alien Skin Software (now Exposure Software) have today announced the imminent release of Exposure X5! Exposure is my pick of Lightroom replacements for Digital Asset Management and the best image browser I have ever tested. The current V4.5 is an excellent RAW converter and is the hub around which my entire image processing workflow revolves. […]

RAW Converter Shootout 2019

Ok folks, it’s that time again – time to test the latest RAW converters to see how they fare when presented with a challenging image. Since I last did this, I have moved away from Adobe products, so Lightroom/Camera Raw is not tested here. If you are happy with Adobe, then that’s fine, they are […]

Topaz Studio V2 Released

Topaz Labs have just released version 2 of their excellent Topaz Studio software. Put simply, Topaz Studio 2 is one of the best, if not the best, photo enhancers available. It provides non destructive editing with both a collection of presets and a comprehensive set of filters. It is the filters that particularly interest me […]

EOS RP – 6 months review

So, I’ve been using the EOS RP for a little over 6 months now. I’ve taken it up mountains, to the coast, countryside and into cities. I’ve even shot a wedding with it. How did it perform? Am I happy with it? Landscape Photography The RP is a great landscape photography camera. It’s easy to […]

Topaz Gigapixel AI Vs Canon EF x2 Extender

I have tested Topaz Gigapixel AI before and concluded that it is the best image resize software. I now wanted to give it quite a stern challenge. How would it fare going up against a  top-rated teleconverter such as the Canon EF 2x Extender, Mark 3? The extender Canon’s 2x extended attaches to some of their […]

Canon EOS RP / Initial Hands on Review

Updated 7th March 2019 The EOS RP arrived in the UK this week and I was able to get my hands on one with the RF 35mm f/1.8 STM lens. Here’s my initial review… Disclaimer ‘In this world there are two kinds of reviewers. Those who use the equipment and those who just quote specs.’ […]

Recommended software

Image Resizing

The best image resize program is Topaz A.I.Gigapixel

Image sharpening & noise reduction

Topaz A.I.Sharpen can not only sharpen images but correct slightly out of focus and blurred images.

Topaz A.I.Clear both sharpens and removes noise. It is the best noise reduction program around.

Photoshop and Lightroom Alternatives

Exposure X4 is the best alternative to Lightroom as far as image browsing and management goes. It is also a decent RAW converter and image editor.

Affinity Photo is the complete Photoshop replacement.

RAW Development

Skylum Luminar is a full featured RAW converter with a basic image browser. Its shadow recovery is the best in the business.

Photolemur is an automatic RAW converter, based on Luminar. Its results are very decent with facial detection and enhancement.

Photo Ninja is a purists RAW converter. It is not as fully featured as the others but it produces some of the best results, especially if you are prepared to build camera profiles.
